Managing Risk means Understanding Consequences

Student Life events and activities provide a healthy balance to academic pursuits. But some activities are just too risky – and often the student event organizers don’t understand the risks involved, or how to manage them.

Student-run events that involve alcohol, transportation and high-risk physical activity may cause serious injury, damage to school property, and negatively affect your institution’s reputation. Should a serious injury occur, chances are it will result in a negligence lawsuit.

Creating partnerships between administrators and student leaders
One of the challenges in employing solid risk management practices in Student Life is getting the participation and commitment of student leaders. Convincing them that student activities pose a very real threat to personal safety, and that it’s in their best interests to protect the members of their student body can be difficult.

That’s where we can help!

McGregor & Associates has more than ten years of experience in risk management consulting and conducting training workshops. We can work together with you and your student leaders to help identify high-risk areas, and create effective ways to prevent accidents and injury. The result is a strong partnership between administration and student leaders, and a safer environment for students.

McGregor & Associates have created the unique ‘Student Event Risk Management’ (SERM) program designed to:

  1. Help Student Union and Student Affairs administrators assess and approve student-run events.
  2. Educate student leaders about what negligence and liability really means in the ‘event’ context.
  3. Train student leaders and event organizers in event planning skills.

If you’re concerned about the consequences of student-run events at your institution, we can help.

I enjoyed very much learning what other schools are doing. The foundation for putting together a RM plan by utilizing the 5 Key Risk Areas – makes it more simple than I have made it in the past – what a blessing this has been! I like the text very much. It is easy to read and can apply to anyone working in a sports/recreation setting.
