Course Goal

This course is aimed at the department ‘Risk Manager’ (or Chair of the Risk Management Committee) – the staff member who has been delegated by the Director to assume overall responsibility for leading and coordinating all risk management efforts in the department. The primary goal of the course is to provide the Risk Manager with the tools and leadership skills needed to successfully lead and champion risk management within their department.

Course Description

As a follow-up to the introductory ‘Risk Management for Recreation Professionals’, this course is designed to take your risk management efforts to the next level. Focusing on teaching the skills needed to develop, coordinate and lead a comprehensive risk management plan for the department, the course will also train participants on how to position themselves as the Risk Manager – both internally within the department and externally within the University setting.

Learning Outcomes

Note: The course is spread over 8 weeks. (There are 4 weeks of actual course content, with one week between each ‘course week’ to allow time to complete assignments.)

On completion of the 4 week course, participants will:

  1. Develop
    • Skills needed to assume leadership risk management role in department
    • Strategies to entrench risk management within Recreation staff
    • A simple, comprehensive and doable risk management plan
  2. Create
    • A highly functional Risk Management Committee
    • An effective and sustainable risk management ‘Training & Education’ plan
  3. Understand
    • The importance of ‘Strategic’ and ‘Enterprise’ Risk Management
    • What leadership in Risk Management entails
    • How Campus Recreation can become campus leaders in risk management

Course Length

This is a 4 week course spread over 8 weeks.
Course work and assignments should take approximately 4-5 hours per week.

  • Webinars used to deliver online ‘lectures’ – also incorporate student Q&A
  • Guest lecturers via Webinars
  • Class enrollment limited to 8 participants to maximize interaction

Prerequisite

Risk Management for Recreation Professionals (Introductory Online Course), or appropriate experience and background in Risk Management.
